Oddly enough this name was not chosen by the band itself, but rather a title given to a select group of musicians from the Rochester, New York area.
The original members of this group, being avid participants in the concert and marching bands for local fire departments, would often get together in smaller groups to play area 'gigs.' When the public asked the name of the group, friends would reply, "They're just a bunch of crazy firemen."
This small group of musicians has since evolved into a band that has witnessed five decades of unprecedented success.
